We leave Fairview-Riverside State Park in Louisiana and head 4 hours west to another state park... this time in Texas! Village Creek State Park is only about a half-hour north of Route 10 and makes a great stopping point on our journey home. We're spending 2 days at this place and plan on hiking every mile...and there's 6 miles of them.
I take Enzo for a short hike after we find our campsite and park the motorhome, and Mike takes a nap. According to AllTrails--I'm lost but I'm still on a trail. Enzo & I figure our way back home and we call it a night.
The next day, Mike, Enzo and I put on our daypacks and snacks and start hiking our way through every trail that is open. Thou we discover that quite a few of them are closed by the river because of all the flooding that happened in June, as well as by Hurricane Beryl.
After that, I walk to the park headquarters to get my Texas Parks Passport stamped and find out about the boat rentals. They have several different programs including a star party tonight...but it starts too late for us because tomorrow is another travel day. Oh well.
We decide to rent a canoe--I've been canoeing with my dad since I was a tot, but I'm not sure about Mike's experience. Unfortunately, Hurricane Beryl has destroyed the banks of the river & it's a nightmare getting the canoe into the water. I climb in, go to carefully sit down and suddenly wind up headfirst into the river as the canoe capsizes. WTF? Of course, no video on that and no one's saying what happened. Since someone asked Mike if he would like some help stabilizing the canoe as he got in... I'm thinking something happened behind me. I'm soaking wet, the river water stinks, so I'm not a happy camper, to say the least.
After that, I take a shower and we go out to dinner at Nice Guy Ricky's American Grill in Lumberton, TX. Amazing food and even more awesome Margaritas! You have to try this place if you're in the area. The food is really delicious but different... you gotta try it!
The next morning is our final travel day to get back to home base... but that's the next episode.
