After our windy trip eastbound to New Mexico and almost getting blown off Route 10 a few times (& making a few stops because of the wind), we finally arrive at Caballo Lake State Park. I knew there were 4 camping loops but did not know that the Riverside camping loop is below the dam... and the lake! (Their website didn't state that) So, of course we have to make a u-turn, towing the Chevy Colorado no less, to back track and find the correct entrance. Needless to say we were exhausted. There is no one at the Riverside campground to check us in so we just found our reserved pull-thru site and put the reservation in the window. No one ever came around to make sure we belonged there--that we knew of. There was a camp host though.
It's a gorgeous park and since it's below the dam the wind is not as bad. There are snow on the mountain tops so even though it is April... it's still cold and we get frost in the mornings. Ha.
It's Easter Sunday when we arrive, so Mike finds a nice restaurant to have our holiday dinner at--the food was exceptional and the service top-notch. It's a golf course restaurant on a beautiful, but windy area of land. I don't know about you, but after a stressful travel day we don't want to cook!
It's a work week for Mike so we spend our days exploring the campground and walking Enzo. Kitten Lucy escapes...but no video on that disaster. She gave us a run for our money--we had to crawl under the rig trying to get her and she wouldn't come out! We're spending 4 days here before we travel north to Albuquerque, NM to check out that area and visit my cousin Bobbie.
On our last full day at this state park I book an appointment for a private Hot Springs spa room at Riverbend Hot Springs at 3pm after Mike gets out of work. It's a half-hour drive and the Hot Springs are amazing. The private spa room looks out over the Rio Grande with a private stone hot tub, waterfall, 2 lounge chairs and a covered deck. OMG. It was a relaxing, amazing experience and we couldn't stop smiling. It was $40 for a 50 minute soak and that's all we could stand--actually after 10 minutes you have to get out and cool off on those lovely lounge chairs before you can go back in. (I think it cured Mike's nerve/back pain.) We could see the public hot springs area if we leaned out over the deck railing and that looked amazing too! We may try those when we go back, --and we will be going back there! Week days are the best time because there are not a ton of people there.
Come with us as we explore what this area offers. We didn't get to check out the town of 'Hatch', as in the Hatch Chili fame but there wasn't enough time. There was a hike we wanted to do but we'll have to try that next time too. Sometimes work gets in the way of playtime. You must put the Hot Springs on your bucket list!
