We're at Choke Canyon State Park in Texas when we first catch wind of a tropical storm brewing in the gulf, but as the days unfold, it escalates into a hurricane and the forecasts shift northward, right toward us!
So on Sunday morning, we scramble to cut our trip short by a day and race home, thinking we’ll make it with time to spare. Spoiler alert: we’re wrong! Our tow bar hitch pin breaks, forcing us to unhitch while I drive the truck and Mike navigates the RV as we plunge into the first bands of rain from the storm. The downpour is so intense, it’s nearly impossible to see the road!
Once we finally park at our home base, we hastily pack up everyone and everything and head back to our sticks-and-bricks. But wait—first thing the next morning, our power goes out! In the sweltering July heat of Texas, it’s a nightmare, and without power, Mike can’t work either. Our generator starts malfunctioning and keeps 'burping'—so we lose it intermittently, causing everything plugged in to reset. Ugh!
We decide to head back to the RV, where the generator runs flawlessly, powering our air conditioning and everything else! Join us as we tackle the wild curve balls thrown our way!
Huge thanks to Ryan Hall, the Weather Channel, and our local CBS TV station for delivering crucial weather and news updates. They helped us (and many others) make smart choices about Hurricane Beryl!
